OK MELBOURNE!

This Weekend:

  • Thursday 16th at the Bridge Mall Inn, Ballarat, with 3 incredibly handsome gentlemen, according to their press release, who call themselves RUTEGER – local big time boys or something.
  • Friday 17th at the Armidale Hotel in melbourne, with the Vivian Girls and one more band.Saturday 18th at the Evelyn Hotel, fitzroy, with Gersey, and Diplomat, from Adelaide. Both bands have new records out, which are being played a lot on jjj – so if that’s a criterea for you, or you just want a whole lot of rock in one night, get yr ass there. Get there early too.

Adelaide:

  • Thursday 23rd, we’re having a launch party at the Enigma Bar. It was gonna be a plain old acoustic gig, but we couldn’t really be bothered with that, so we decided to lay on a few Coopers, a few bowls of nuts etc, and crank the album over the PA. There might even be a few goodies lying around. It’ll be a lot of fun, you can lounge around on the sofas talkin’ shit to us all night, we don’t mind. Kellie and I might do a short set of songs off the record too if the mood takes us. …oh, ok ok, we ARE doing that! So, COME, and have a relaxed night with us. It’ll be the place to be, very sophisticated etc etc..
  • Friday 24th we’re at the Holdfast Htl with Lifo. Our old stomping ground. No tantrums this gig, promise, it’ll rock! Get there early for good seats.Saturday 25th we’re at the Austral with Diplomat again, and Further. It’s gonna be a crazy night, you’re gonna have to get there in the Morning to ensure you even get in. Or maybe just turn up at the normal time and tell ’em yr on the guestlist.

Remember, we’ve got MIKE in the band now too – it’ll be his first trip to Vic and SA with us, he’s very excited, he’s been sitting atr home practicing every day and night (unlike the rest of us). So come and check him out. He cut the cake big time on the weekend in Sydney.

“Rocks On The Soul” – Screamfeeder * * * *

November 9, 2000

Arguably Australia’s most underrated rock act makes their best album yet. But will anybody hear it?

There are many reasons (mostly relating to record company bungles) why Screamfeeder have never risen to the commercial cream of Australian alternative rock that has seen their contemporaries such as Spiderbait and Regurgitator become national heroes.

Yet not one of these reasons relates to their musical output. Like Kram and Janet from Spiderbait, Screamfeeder’s Tim Steward and Kellie Lloyd are lovers of the great pop hook foremost. Once they get that right, the perfect pop song tends to take care of itself. “Static” and “Dart” from their last longplayer, 1996’s Kitten Licks are perfect example of this, as are the two single “Hi Cs” and “Triple Hook”, that have played stop-gaps until the arrival of this new album.

Rocks On The Soul still has enough deft pop hooks to make a 10 million-selling Offspring album, but there is a sense of subtlety and orchestration that makes this collection more cohesive than the Brisbane trio’s previous albums. Opener “Stopless” features a characteristically melodic vocal from Lloyd, but it is the surging groove of Shwereb’s Built To Spill-esque guitar assault that gives the track a hypnotic flow.

Equally the new single “Above the Dove” might work loud/soft dynamics, but it is still underplayed with a soft touch that separates it from a million post-Pixies power-pop tunes. Much has been made of electronic outfit Pound System’s employment as producers on Rocks The Soul, but there really is no distinct stamp of their intense beat-driven attack here. Instead they simply enhance the sonic punch of each track and slightly simplify the textured Screamfeeder rock sound.

Sadly without the support of a major record company, Rocks On the Soul is unlikely to see Screamfeeder enjoy the success they have for so long deserved. Instead they will probably just have to take bittersweet comfort in the fact that they are continuing to make pop+rock records as good as any other three-piece in the country.

OK Sydney: this weekend: Friday night the HOEY, with Ben from Bluebottle Kiss, and Earth To Nigel. Saturday night the Blaxland Tavern, wherever the hell that is. 2 shows only, don’t miss out!

All you guys who stand there the whole gig watching my chords then come up afterwards and say “I love your guitar sound man” – It’s up for sale!!! I’m selling the amp head I’ve been lugging around the country for the last 5 years. It’s my trusty old EMINAR. 4 knobs – volume, bass, treble, presence.

Simple, beautiful. It cranks out an unspecified wattage – I reckon about 50 – 70, but sounds reliably great. I’m only asking peanuts for it, so first come first served.

I’m also getting rid of my lovely yellow TOKAI “Love Rock” guitar – it’s been played at a million gigs, you know the one.. it shreds (!), it’s reliable, stays in tune perfectly, and has been lovingly maintained and  upgraded over the years. Tears will fall when I say goodbye to it, so it needs a loving home.

While we’re on the subject, Kel’s bass amp is for sale too, a LABSYSTEMS head and quad. It’s great, it rocks, it’s been played by Kel, what more do you want?
