Plus One Records, P1-35. Released June 2011

Recorded by Darek Mudge at the shed over a really long time, probably about 2007 – 2010. We were really lazy with releasing this one as we were all tied up with our other bands.

The CD version has two bonus tracks – Wrong Wrong Wrong and Always, from the album.

1. Ants
2. Mum and Dad

ANTS
I don’t understand people they don’t know what they want / they just want to sit around looking nonchalant / I don’t think that they know what they think that they know / and I know I don’t wanna go where they think I wanna go / I don’t understand people they got nothing to say / everything they say is what they’ve heard somebody else say / is it all as boring as they always say it is / they get up in the morning, don’t even know what day it is / I don’t understand about the french revolution / but in 50 thousand years of human evolution / they haven’t even learned to recognise the truth / they’ll believe anything, they don’t want the proof / survival instincts are non existent / if the shops closed down they’d be dead in 5 seconds / I don’t understand people what are they on about / every time they open their mouth what’s those noises coming out? / what language are you speaking it’s not one that I’ve heard? / every first word’s blurred every second one’s slurred every third is absurd / never mind where are you coming from what planet are you living on? / we look kinda similar but we don’t have that much in common / people do the weirdest things / running around like ants, getting down with the program / getting all busy they make themselves dizzy / spending all their energy making someone’s life a misery / I don’t understand where are these ants all coming from / what are they trying to achieve, have they even begun / why so serious, what’s the big mystery? / there ain’t that much history that can’t be undone / what are they trying to achieve and have they even begun? / there’s not that much history that can’t be undone / there is not much history that can’t be undone / there is not much history that can’t be undone

MUM & DAD
What kinda childhood would you have liked to have had / if you could go back and make it a little bit more rad / if you could swap your brother or your mother or your dad/into somebody different, how could that be bad?/would you be better off now if there’d been more rules to follow /you’d have more to kick back against and say that you were forced to swallow so much of their crap / none of it fit you /you’d come off a little cooler but it’s a big compromise to commit to / what if your dad was a cop, or a drunk, or a car salesman or dead or a banker or a wanker /what if he never impressed you with anything but it didn’t matter and you didn’t care/what if your mum was stupid or weird or a brain surgeon or a bus driver or absent or normal / what if she numbed you with boring morality but that was normality and you weren’t aware /what kinda adulthood would you like to book /if you could take a look into the future somehow / would you swap your sofa or your boss or your lover / into someone you actually feel an attraction to now / what if the change was unbelievably small / but suddenly you didn’t know yourself any more / you can’t understand the things that you’re thinking / you only recognise every third word and they’re not linking together / like someone’s yelling in your ear when you’re drinking / I’m nodding and smiling but i’m getting this sinking feeling that everything is like it is for a reason / and i’m getting this sinking feeling that everything is like it is for a reason / what if your dad was asthmatic, asiatic, albino or an actor, drove a tractor never smacked you / what if he never impressed you with anything but it didn’t matter and you didn’t care / what if your mum was angry or russian or pretended to be happy or had delusions of grandchildren / what if she numbed you with boring morality but it was as natural as brushing your hair /I can’t hear you over the music / your message is not getting through / did you say something about going to munich? / or did I confuse it with / having a picnic, or / wearing a tunic or / playing the – music’s too loud I can’t really hear you / i can’t really get any nearer / did you say something about heavy metal / or was it just babble about putting on the kettle / riding a camel / eating an apple

SUMMER ENDS
It’s a 2 drummer summer call the plumber come at once jump in your plumber’s truck / there’s water everywhere downstairs it’s very messy when your shtick becomes unstuck / all the young bucks who paint their trucks in summer’s colours paint their corners set their clocks / quick call the drummer, son the summer’s on the run we’re almost running out of luck / you might have read a thousand books on modern art but still your hand seems to be stuck / when summer ends again your friends pretend again remembering it didn’t suck / from dove to duck from buck to schmuck to dumb fuck from tick to tock from tock to tick / the solar flare in every photo everywhere’s almost enough to make you sick

YOU & THE BISHOP
When you said I’m going out for a take away I didn’t know you’d be taking yourself away / can I come with you I hadn’t finished saying what I was saying before you said your life’s too big and too messy to fit into mine / I can’t understand why you’ve got to keep trying / since when has a square peg fit into a round hole? / you might get it in there but it will be painful / since when has a square peg fit into a round hole? / you might get it in there but it will be painful / we both couldn’t move much it would be uncomfortable / fighting for corners to paint ourselves into / it’s not very difficult to understand / there are corners of the chessboard where you don’t want to land / I forgot what I was saying when I found out you and the bishop had something planned / then you said I’m going back to my friends even though I don’t really have that many friends / most of my friends are all your friends but in the end I’m not involved with too many of them / like people I only see when I’m out at night / if I was to see them during the day I might recognise them but not know how to speak to them / probably cos we haven’t got anything in common / 9 times out of 10 there is nothing worth saying / I would prefer if we didn’t keep playing the game where you stand there and talk and I just stand there smiling / and pretending to listen / I’m comfortable with uncomfortable silences if that’s ok with you they’re just more honest / I’m going back to my friends to try and pick things up with them again

Button

Don’t bring me symptoms / I don’t feel sick / I don’t want a promise if it won’t stick / I don’t want nothing except you to push my button / don’t want anaesthetic / I’m not awake / I feel pathetic / mistakes I make / I don’t need nothing except you to push my button / you know the secret / I hope you ain’t forgotten / I don’t want nothing except you to push my button / don’t want an injection / I’ve got it sewn / don’t want your infections / I’ve got my own

Lost in the Snow

It didn’t hurt / we kept right on playing / we hadn’t heard the faithful praying / with all we had it didn’t seem to matter / the news was bad / the future badder / falling into a hole was pointless and just wrong / we only wish you what it takes to get along / it didn’t rain / skies didn’t open / the world spun on / angels were hoping / it didn’t hurt / it was a lesson / snowing on dirt / you were a blessing / you lost your vision and forgot your golden star / and when it did rain they weren’t tears for you at all / you kept it from us you were losing it / the angels watching over you just let you slip away so painlessly / they were the only ones who knew / now the snow has frozen up both your cities / the angels disappeared from view / they left before we could have owned them / like they had nothing left to do

Funny Fish

Funny fish can you stomach this? / don’t gimme that – there’s meat on my dish / I wish you’d tell me yeah tell me tell me I want you to tell me / is my baby gonna be ok? / whitey dread / what’s that you said? / don’t gimme that – it’s all in my head / I wish you’d wake up / yeah wakey wakey I want you to wake up / cos I heard the tale where she woke up dead / she’s out of my hair but not out of my headspace yeah / and she’s a funny fish / a funny fish / and she’s alright / honey hon / this ain’t much fun / you gave me that mercury on my tongue / I wish she’d quit it / yeah hit it hit it I want you to spit / cos I heard the tale then I found out the end / she’s left for heaven and she’s never to return / and she’s a funny fish / she’s a funny fish / what a funny fish / yeah a funny fish / and she’s alright

Terminal

Don’t turn around / they could be watching you / and every second gone / and every moment wrong / you feel a terminal unease / you feel you turned out wrong / and all the time you spent trying to get it right again / animal intuition guides your every step / did I let you know how things are prone to go? / don’t plan out every move too well to fit some groove / can’t say that I can expect anything from anything / never said I never wanted it all / but did you plan it that way when it turned out ok? / don’t say yes / yes yes yes / found you changed your mind today / found you changed your mind today

Millionth Wish

Here I am / can you wrap me up / wrap me up in your hands? / here I am / lost inside your desert when you bury me / bury me in the sand / in the sand / sand / if distance is your master / walk a thousand miles / another million wishes / and I’d kill just to see your smile / wait for me / it’s only been about a million days / I tried so hard to get through / wait for me / that is what you said you’d do / and I promised that I’d wait for you too / you / the train of thought has disrailed / you never thought I’d tell / communication’s failed / and I never thought you’d kill me so well / here I am / and your million wishes are now gone / and your million wishes are gone / the train of thought has disrailed / you never thought I’d tell / communication’s failed / and I never thought you’d kill me so well

Hole of Blood

There is a lot of major carnage in nature and we can only let it pass / real guys don’t want to watch the tarantula annihilate / they’d rather watch the cowboys kicking ass / but when she says she can’t have you because her hole of blood is keeping her whole / there’s a lot of bad inside the hand of every man / we don’t have to act like ants / we don’t live for the tribe / don’t have to live by the tribe to survive / it’s better to die / it’s better first that you should know some about the forces keeping you alive / don’t beat it to submission / it’s always fear that always underlies / too scared to adore / fresh orders to obey / keeping you unsure / keep your hate at bay / or does it make you bigger? / getting things disfigured / you are your own worst enemy / just admit it you don’t like alternatives / there’s a lot of indiscrepancies on board / contradictions are the only thing that’s sure / real guys don’t want to see a death they couldn’t create / they want some real action so they can relate
